Fancy diamonds: the colors you don’t expect for unique jewelry!

A diamond is forever… but who said it only has to be transparent and classic? Fancy diamonds surprise with extraordinary colors and unique cuts that make them even more irresistible in your gold jewelry!

Diamonds are not only transparent!

How do you picture a diamond? Probably transparent, shiny and flawless, but you will be surprised to learn that diamonds are not only transparent, there are also gems that sport unexpected and fascinating hues. These are the so-called fancy color diamonds, the favorites of those who like to stand out in style.

But before I tell you all their secrets, a step back: did you know that diamonds are made of pure carbon, arranged in a very tight crystal lattice? It is precisely this structure that gives diamonds their typical clarity-or almost always!

What are fancy-colored diamonds?

Don’t let the somewhat exotic name fool you: the term “fancy” denotes those diamonds that are not colorless, but have colorful and rare shades. The term is also used to denote special and fancy cuts, but for now let’s focus on the color!

All fancy colored diamonds are part of this exclusive family, moreover, when you consider that no two fancy diamonds in the world are alike, this adds to their appeal. But it doesn’t end there, to classify a diamond as “fancy color” the color must be clearly visible and evenly distributed on the stone.

Where do colors come from? Nature’s secrets

Have you ever wondered how a diamond changes its “dress”? It all depends on tiny chemical elements or natural events that intervene during its formation underground. Here are which ones:

  • Yellow, orange and brown: due to the presence of nitrogen (fancy brown and yellow diamonds are the most common)
  • Blue: thanks to boron, which gives deep and regal hues
  • Green: due to exposure to natural radiation over time
  • Pink and red: caused by deformation of the crystal structure (red is very rare!).
  • White, gray and black: related to a high intensity of mineral inclusions
  • Purple and violet: a result of the combination of deformation and hydrogen traces

Saturation and hue: the true value of fancy colors

The criteria to keep in mind to classify a diamond as fancy, are not only those related to hue, thus the visible color in the gem; one must also consider hue, thus the amount of light present in the color; and, saturation: how much the color of a diamond is intended!

The more vividly colored a diamond is, the more valuable (and expensive) it will be. Official classifications include:

  • Fancy light (pale, unsaturated color)
  • Fancy (medium saturation)
  • Fancy intense
  • Fancy vivid (saturation is highest and that is why they are the most valuable)
  • Fancy deep
  • Fancy dark (very saturated color)

A fancy vivid pink or blue diamond, for example, can reach very high values and become the heart of a dream piece of jewelry.

Fancy diamond jewelry: exclusivity to wear

If you love jewelry that doesn’t go unnoticed, then a fancy-colored diamond ring or tennis is right for you. Paired with yellow, white or rose gold, these diamonds lend a touch of out-of-the-box elegance and a hint that immediately catches the eye.

In a world where everyone chooses the “classic” clear diamond, you could sport a gemstone that tells your more original and sophisticated side.
